Heart Prep for Sunday, October 8th

Okay, big question for this week! How many of you would consider yourselves to be truly … content? I’m sure there’s some who consider themselves to be contented people, but I don’t think it’s very many. Most of us would like to be content, we hope for contentment, and occasionally we find it … but it usually doesn’t last. Honestly, most of us are rarely content.

And part of the problem is that we think contentment comes from a carefree life. I’ll be content when I get into the right school, get the right degree, and get started (finally) in the right career. I’ll be content when the good-looking godly spouse comes along and captures my heart. I’ll be content when all the bills are paid, when I’m out of debt, and there’s still some money left over. I’ll be content when my kids are grown, godly, married off, and raising my grandchildren in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. I’ll be content … when the pressures off.

But is that really how contentment works? This Sunday, we’ll continue looking at “discipleship in action” from 1 Timothy 6. Here the Apostle Paul knows that Timothy is battling false teaching and the destructive consequences that it brings. It must feel like a non-stop battle … and it’s hard to catch your breath. And Paul has given Timothy a lot of instructions about what to do and how to treat people. And now he says, “be content.” Wait, what? I can hear Timothy now, “Paul, for crying out loud, you’ve just given me 18 tasks that needed to be done yesterday, and now you tell me to be content? How?”

That’s a good question, and that’s the question we'll be looking at this Sunday. And the answer may not be what we expect, but I expect it will be what we need. See you then, Dr. Dave
