Heart Prep for Sunday, October 2nd
This Sunday, we’re continuing our series on 1st & 2nd Peter. So far, Peter has repeatedly told them that they need to live differently than those around them, that they are to be “in the world, but not of the world.” And they are finding out that this is easier said than done. This week we’ll be looking at 1 Peter 3:1-7, which is one of the more controversial passages in the Bible. Go ahead and read it, and you’ll quickly see why. It’s a very blunt passage on wives and husbands. Many people today immediately react negatively to such a passage.
However, in the first century, it was considered scandalous by many that the Apostles Peter and Paul even addressed women in their letters. The fact that the woman’s position and her situation were even considered and addressed was a bold step forward by 1st Century standards. When it came to treating women as persons, let alone as equals, Peter and Paul were way ahead of the pack. So rather than viewing them as putting women down according to our own 21st Century cultural standards, they were, in fact, lifting women up with this kind of teaching that men and women were equal in God’s eyes.
Any Biblical teaching on men and women, wives and husbands, is still quite applicable in our times today. So come Sunday with an open mind, and we’ll talk it through. As always, it should be interesting. See you then, Dr. Dave
