Heart Prep for Sunday, July 9th
How much time do you spend on social media? You don’t have to answer that, but I’m guessing it’s way more than you’d like to admit. Sadly, that’s true for most of us. Our life is largely lived before a screen. And it’s not all bad … but some of it is. And one of the most difficult things about our online life is that we’re often unaware of how it’s affecting us. We look to social media, gaming, any type of video, merchandise/ing, politics, sports, crime, terror, and even warfare – all online or on a screen – in order to get glimpses of something revealed that is above and beyond us. The sociologist Peter Berger called these “windows of transcendence.”
King David knew something about that. And he shows us how to look for true transcendence in this week’s Psalm. We’ll be looking at “Prayer for Transcendence” from Psalm 63. David is in the wilderness … again … and his life is in danger … again. But this time he looks up and discovers the magnificence of God amidst a time of his own utter humiliation.
Certainly, we would like to skip the utter humiliation part, but most of us would like to see the magnificence of God part. But we don’t know how. Well, here David is going to give us glimpses of what we’re searching for and clues on to how to find it. And I expect that makes this Psalm more than worthwhile. I hope to see you Sunday, Dr. Dave
