Heart Prep for Sunday, July 23rd

We’ve been working through a number of Psalms and seeing what they have to say about the things we are (or should) be praying about.  We’ve looked at how to pray about foolishness, anxiety, repentance, tears, thirst, transcendence, and wisdom — I know, it reads just like your typical prayer request list.  But that’s the Psalms for you — they get at the things we forget, or haven’t even thought of yet.

And this week is no exception.  We’ll be looking at Psalm 91 and a “Prayer for our Rest.”  Except this Psalm isn’t talking about physical rest, but mental and emotional rest, perhaps spiritual rest would be a better description.  It’s talking about a deep rest we have in the presence of God.  But here’s the catch, it’s a rest that comes despite difficult circumstances or overwhelming situations.

Dane Ortlund writes that “This psalm is a song of deep consolation to the one looking to God for rest amid the adversities of life.  Its consistent theme is the rest and peace God gives.  Amid the storms of life, God is a safe and serene harbor.  Have you experienced this?  Or are you internally frenetic?  Do you see the Lord Himself, your Heavenly Father, ruling over all that washes into your life, hard and easy, good and bad?  Do you see Him nurturing you along in life, loving you, protecting you, working all for good?”  Maybe … maybe not.

And that’s what we’re going to look at this week.  How do we find rest when everything else in our life says we don’t have either the time or energy for rest?  There’s no bandwidth or margin for the deep rest that the Psalmist describes.  So, that’s what we’re going to look at this Sunday.  I hope you’ll find it worthwhile.  See you then, Dr. Dave
