Heart Prep for Sunday, January 30th

Some of you may remember this wonderful piece of artwork.  It’s hanging in the church office.  It’s a picture of Moses going up Mt. Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from God.  It was drawn by Miss Fiona Hanley (a former, much-loved member of our church) for the sermon series I did on Exodus back in 2016.

I thought of it this week as we’ll be looking at Deuteronomy 4:44-5:22, which contains the Ten Commandments.  This is the re-telling or re-giving of the Law of God, from which we get the name Deuteronomy or “Second Law” (Deutero = Second, Nomos = Law).

Since most of Deuteronomy is an exposition of the commandments, and we’re going to look at each one in some detail in the coming weeks, this week we’re going to look at them as a whole.  I’m going to try and answer the questions, “Why did God give us the commandments?  Why are they important?  What are we supposed to do with them?  What’s the big picture of the Ten Commandments?  And how do they connect us to Jesus?

Wow, that’s a lot of big questions.  But not to worry, I’m sure I can get through them in just a few hours (just kidding).  Seriously though, the Ten Commandments help us in our pursuit of “Knowing God” because they reflect the character of God.

As we’re celebrating the Lord’s Supper this Sunday, I’m also going to show how the commandments connect us to communion.  That’s a lot, so I would appreciate the prayers.  It should be an interesting day, I hope to see you then, Dr. Dave
