Heart Prep for the Third Sunday in Advent

We’re moving into week three of our Advent Series on The Indescribable Gift.  However, that title is a little bit of a misnomer, because Colossians One is trying to do just that — describe Jesus — since He is the gift.  Perhaps it’s indescribable because the Apostle Paul uses so many different terms, different theological concepts, different titles, and different goals in reference to Jesus.

Two weeks ago we started with “Jesus, Our Gospel.”  Last week, we looked at “Jesus, Our King.”  And this week, we’ll be in Colossians 1:15-18, where we’ll see “Jesus, Our God.”  Three different descriptions with two more weeks to go.  Maybe it’s not so easy to describe Jesus after all.

The fact that Jesus is hard to describe becomes clear in this passage, which refers to Jesus as the “firstborn” twice.  That’s important because, in the history of the church, Colossians 1:15 is one of the most misused and misunderstood verses in the whole Bible.  So, we’re going to try to untangle all of that this Sunday, asking what difference it should make in our lives, and why that’s important at Christmas.  It should be interesting.  See you Sunday, Dr. Dave
