Heart Prep for Sunday, July 25th

Freedom is a popular concept in this country.  Since the colonies declared their independence in 1776, it has been woven into the very fabric of our society.  Who hasn’t heard the statement, “It’s a free country!”  Shoppers love to buy one and get one free.  Economists believe in free trade.  Capitalists love free enterprise.  President Roosevelt spoke of four freedoms in a famous speech when he referred to the freedom of speech, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want, and the freedom from fear.  Everyone loves freedom.  What’s not to love.  It’s classically American, like mom and apple pie.

Our passage for this week is Galatians 5:13-15, and the topic is “Serve One Another.”   Paul opens this passage referring to Christian freedom and yet he eventually gets to serving one another.  What is Christian freedom, and what does it have to do with serving one another?  How are they connected?  He also warns the Galatians of the danger related to their freedom.  How could freedom be dangerous?

You may think this will be a sermon all about encouraging you to serve more.  That is definitely not the case.  Potomac Hills is a serving church.  How else would we have our worship services every week without faithful members serving week in and week out to set up and tear down the auditorium?  It would not happen otherwise.  The same can be said for children’s church and the nursery.  No, this will not be a sermon trying to convince you to serve more.  My goal in this sermon is to show you the connection between our Christian freedom and our service to one another.  What motivates us to serve?  What animates our service to one another?  Why are we driven to serve each other, even when we don’t know each other that well?  Come on Sunday and find out.  I hope to see you there.
