Heart Prep for Sunday, January 15th

Well, we’ve spent two weeks now in our January series on “Coming Home: Bringing Back the Wanderer.”   I’ve probably gotten more feedback, questions, and comments on the last two sermons than I’ve received in years.  And that’s because almost every one of us knows someone who’s a wanderer.  It could be a child or some other relative, perhaps a friend we grew up with, maybe someone who was in the college fellowship with us, or even a neighbor or co-worker.  It seems that we all know someone who once was a part of the church, and who’s now wandered away from the church, wandered away from family and friends, wandered away from Christ, and most likely wandered away from all three.

One of the common issues for wanderers is a deep struggle with doubt.  And if we’re going to seek after the doubtful wanderer, then we need to know what fuels their doubts.  Because when you’re wandering in the darkness, doubting comes easily.  But it doesn’t come in the same way, and it doesn’t take the same form … however, it does have the same result, in that it keeps people away from Jesus.

So this week, we’ll be looking at “The Doubtful Wanderer” through the life of the Apostle Thomas.  You can find his story in John 20:24-29, which would also be good for you to read before Sunday.  Of all the wanderers, this may be the most common one, and the one who’s usually the most open to hearing the gospel once again.  Often, what they need, and what they’re looking for (whether they’ll admit it or not), is a fresh experience of the Lord Jesus Christ in their life.  So let’s ask God to make that happen for our wandering friends and family, because prayer is always our first and best option.  See you Sunday, Dr. Dave
