SUGGESTED HOME WORSHIP SERVICE

January 13, 2019

As you know, Loudoun County Public Schools has closed all school facilities for Sunday due to the inclement weather forecast.  Therefore, we have put together the following worship service for your use at home:

WELCOME TO POTOMAC HILLS!

Today we are a church distributed, each meeting in our own homes, but still gathered with the saints to worship the Triune God, not just here in Northern Virginia, but around the world.

GATHERING HYMN

Sing the 1st song!  You will find all the songs for today’s service at https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0kJWHkfV4vGcHrCPWoxZr7?fbclid=IwAR2RrTFz4jS10loCPVW2EvAEH39L2Vp0aF3HqcRC2a7yjTNbSvG5z4ebzf4&si=gAUgwB4FReK0B1lgkTbQcw

You can also find our songs posted to our Facebook group (Thanks to Claire Gardner)!  You can listen or sing along.  If you have the Spotify app, you can go to it and do a search for Potomac Hills.  It should come right up!  Spotify lets you click on each individual song as you go through the service.  And don’t worry, it sounds exactly like our church!

All songs used by permission, CCLI # 305096

RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP (Choose someone to be the leader, or just read both parts):

2 John 1:4-9

Leader: I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father.

People: And now I ask you … not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning— that we love one another.

Leader: And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.

People: For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Leader: Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.

People: Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

OPENING PRAYER (What are some things we pray for at the beginning of worship? You can pray for those things too!)

WORSHIP WITH SONGS & HYMNS OF PRAISE

Again, go to Spotify and sing the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th songs.

WORSHIP THROUGH PRAYER

Prayer – where we humbly ask God to be active in our lives, in our church, and in our world – Is a vital part of the worship of God.  We pray expectantly, showing God to be great, and demonstrating our faith in a God who is near enough to know and care about our every need, yet powerful enough to help us.

Here are some things you can pray about this morning:

  1. Safety – there tends to be a lot of accidents (both at home and on the road) during inclement weather. Let’s pray that God would keep us safe.
  1. Mercy – there are a number of people in our congregation (and some of our friends and neighbors) who have health needs that can be jeopardized by cold weather or power outages. Who do you know that might need your help? Pray for them, and then call to check up on them after the service.  If they need help, please contact one of our deacons.
  1. Faith and Doubts – we always have a number of people who are isolated during bad storms. Isolation can bring about doubts or it can increase our faith. Let’s pray that our trust in a Sovereign God (even over the weather) will be strengthened this morning.
  1. Fellowship – one of the best things about getting shut in during a storm is that you find yourself missing your friends from church. Pray for a few of them now and then plan on inviting them over for dinner later this week.

CONFESSION OF SIN (pray together in unison)

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy upon us. And grant, O most merciful Father, for Jesus' sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and joyful life, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (read it in unison)

If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared. (Psalm 130:3-4)

WORSHIP THROUGH OFFERING AND A SONG

We believe that the offering is an act of worship. Giving to the work of the church in building God’s Kingdom is a strong reminder of our dependence on Him.

You can still give today through Realm at  https://onrealm.org/potomachills/give or through PayPal to give@potomachills.org

Then go to Spotify and sing the 5th song.

READING OF THE WORD: Jeremiah 13:1-25

You’ll be asked to read today’s passage at the beginning of the sermon video, decide who’s going to read it now so you’ll have your Bible open and ready.

Note to parents, there are some hard sections and blunt phrases you might have to explain, so you may want to read it over first.  For example, verse 22 is about being hurt by someone else.

PREACHING OF THE WORD:  Rev. Dorst

“The Prophet’s Corruption of the Best”

This is the 15th sermon on Jeremiah entitled “Faithful Living in a Fallen Land

All sermons are recorded and available for download at www.PotomacHills.org.

Today’s sermon was pre-recorded and you can find it on our website!  Go to the below link, click on “downloads”, and then click on “sermon video”, and it should automaticallly come up!  If you click “watch” you’ll just get the audio (I don’t know why):  https://www.potomachills.org/sermons/sermon/2019-01-11/the-prophets-corruption-of-the-best-jeremiah-13

RESPONDING TO GOD IN PRAYER AND SONG

Acceptable responses to hearing and applying God’s Word to our lives include Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication.  Take time to thank God that we can worship Him no matter where we are, or what the weather is!

Then go to Spotify and sing the 6th and last song.

RECEIVING THE BLESSING & ONE ANOTHER TIME

End your time worshiping together with this blessing from Matthew 18:3-4

“[Jesus] said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

If you’re worshiping with others, give everyone a big hug and then enjoy a hot meal together.

If you’re by yourself today, take time this afternoon to call someone else and catch up on how they’re doing.

We’re glad you joined the church distributed for worship today!

Go to our Facebook Group and let us know how it went!
