Heart Prep for Sunday, October 3rd
Wow, five weeks in and we’re finally getting to chapter 2 of the Book of Philippians. This week we’re looking at Philippians 2:1-4 and the topic of “Humble Significance.” Humility is one of those things that we know is supposed to be part of the Christian life … and yet, at the same time, it seems to be something that’s near impossible to cultivate. I mean, as soon as you think you’ve got it, you’ve lost it. So what do we do?
Well, the Apostle Paul points us to Christ. Not as an example to follow (though he will do that in Philippians), but as the One who makes humility a possibility in our lives. In a world that operates on the principle of looking out for oneself and seizing opportunities for self-promotion, the gospel calls us to humbly regard others more highly than ourselves. And when we do that, it demonstrates that we truly know the One who humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross.
Then Paul gives us some commonsense guidance in how to cultivate humility in our lives and shows us how that will not only change our lives but build up the church too. And that’s important because we don’t live the Christian life as individuals, but as church members who care for and serve one another. And it takes humility to do that well. That’s a lot for this Sunday. I hope to see you there, Dr. Dave
