Heart Prep for Sunday, November 3rd
Happy Reformation Day! If you're reading this on what most of America celebrates as Halloween, you're actually reading it on the 502nd anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany. While the Reformation was much bigger than Luther, and the 95 Theses didn't address everything that the Reformation stood for, it was a hugely symbolic event that set a lot of other events in motion. Events that helped reform the church, clarify the essentials of the Gospel, and start new churches with a commitment to teaching the whole counsel of Scripture. You might say that Luther and his challenge to the church were some of the seeds that were sown in an area that was tilled and ready to receive and respond with amazing growth.
Our Scripture passage this Sunday is all about seeds that are sown in different kinds of soil. This is Mark's first record of one of Jesus' parables, and Jesus says that it's kind of a foundational parable - that if the disciples don't understand this one then they won't understand any of them. And thankfully, He gives a detailed explanation of what the elements of the parable mean. So I'll let Jesus explain His story and we can do the work of seeing how our lives and actions are challenged by His parable. Sunday is communion and then the Fall Festival, one of my favorite events of the year. Can't wait for it all, see you then! -Dave
