This Sunday's Worship Materials can be found in the "Featured Sermon" below. We meet in person at Harper Park Middle School, and the service is also livestreamed on our YouTube channel.

Heart Prep for Sunday, May 13th

This week, we’ve come to another well-known passage in The Gospel of Mark.  And that’s the story of the Rich Young Ruler in Mark 10:17-31.  One of the things I find most interesting about this story is how it’s placed right after Jesus’ teaching that “whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”  Because it sure doesn’t seem like the Rich Young Ruler is all that interested in receiving the Kingdom like a child.

So, besides the obvious contrast, why does Mark tell us this story now?  It’s not for its teaching on discipleship, since Jesus lays what seems like a crushing burden on the man.  It’s not for its teaching on evangelism because Jesus sends him away.  And it’s not for its teaching on mastering personal relationships because Jesus doesn’t correct the young man’s arrogance.  So why is this story here?

Well, Jesus wants to strip away the things we trust in, and like us, this man has several, and replace them with the One thing we have to trust in but can’t control.  And that means that Jesus gives us some hard sayings here.  And so we’ll unpack all of that on Sunday and hopefully, it will challenge us in a variety of ways.

Once again, I’ll be preaching via video on our YouTube channel (You’ve already subscribed, haven’t you?).  On Saturday we’ll post all the links and everything you need to worship on Sunday at our website – www.potomachills.org – just click on the “latest sermon” link.  I hope you’ve found the whole worship service, including the sermon on video, to be an encouragement to you.  So, let’s worship together … and together, let’s look to and learn from Jesus.  Should be interesting, Dr. Dave

P.S. We sent out a link to a congregational survey about reopening for worship.  It would really be helpful if each family unit answered that survey, thanks.
