Heart Prep for Sunday, June 13th

This week, we are starting a new sermon series on the One Another commands of the New Testament.  I can’t think of a more needed, and more timely, set of Biblical commands for us in this day and age.

As I shared in my commencement address at RTS, DC last month, the past year has worn us all out with unending controversy.  There have been constant debates over the treatment of women, human sexuality, racial reconciliation, political polarization, not to mention the pandemic itself.  Social Distancing!  Masks! Vaccines!  Online Church!  Pastors becoming YouTube stars! (Well, that one may be overdoing it a little).  All of which brought controversy into the church.  I can’t wait to preach on 2 Corinthians 3:18 (you can look that one up)!

So now we need to reboot life in the church a little bit.  And the One Another commands are not only Christian commands, but they’re also good common sense.  I mean, ‘Love One Another’ … ‘Serve One Another’ … ‘Forgive One Another’ … who could disagree with such godly counsel?  But the doing of these commands … well, “that’s a whole ‘nother story,” as my children’s grandmother used to say.

So, we are going to start this series by looking at Romans 12:9-21, with special attention paid to Romans 12:10 and the phrase, “Outdo one another in showing honor.”  What does that mean?  And how do we do it?  And is it something we compete in?  Or do we somehow do this together?  And is it a command … or just good advice?  And what does this have to do with cookies?

Well, I’m going to try to answer all those questions this Sunday (especially the one about the cookies).  See you then! Dr. Dave
