Heart Prep for Sunday, December 30th

We have come to the end of 2018!  We’ve spent our year in 1 Corinthians, James, Jeremiah, and now John. We even fit a topical series on trouble in there somewhere too.  Basically, we’ve spent a lot of time looking at the idolatries of our hearts.  But we’ve also spent a lot of time looking at how the Gospel sets us free from those very idolatries.  I hope that our time in these books in 2018 has convicted of your sin somewhere along the way.  I know that it has been a challenging year for me.  And I think it’s fitting that we end the year, a year spent looking long and hard at our sin, with John 1:16-18.
It’s fitting because grace is so prominent in these verses.  We’ve spent the past year looking at and lamenting our wretched sinfulness, the weakness of our hearts, and the idolatry that grips our lives.  What we desperately need is for grace to abound.  We need grace to be so plentiful that it covers over all our sins.  And that’s what we get here in John 1:16-18.  We get a grace that piles up.  We get a grace that is the fulfillment of the Law.  We get a grace that restores our intimacy with the Lord.
We’ve just celebrated Christmas.  And we often simply celebrate Jesus’ birth.  It’s a glorified birthday party in many ways.  But the Incarnation is so much more than that.  It is a grace of amazing magnitude.  Come Sunday thinking about the amazing truth of what it means to have Emmanuel, God with us.  See you then!
