Heart Prep for Sunday, August 11th

This week we are embarking on a new sermon series.  We’ll be spending the next 3 weeks talking about the mission of the church.  As a church, we seem to be in a season of planning, examination, and evaluation.  The session has met for several extra meetings as we continue to work through the information that we gathered from those listening sessions at the community groups last October-November.  Between all that info and their own thoughts on the life and future of the church, there’s a lot of data to try to bring together into concrete ideas, goals, and emphases. It’s a slow process to say the least.

But as we, as a church, think about these questions about the church, the session and the pastors think that it would be good to spend some time looking at what the Bible has to say about all that.  And so, we’re going to be spending the next 3 weeks looking at the actual mission of the church, the outward mission of the church, and the upward mission of the church.

This Sunday, we’re going to be taking a 30,000 foot view of the mission of the church.  But as we seek to define the task of the church, we also need to define who is being called to do what.  There are clear differences between the call of the church and the call to a Christian individual. And as we explore the questions of “What” and “Who”, we’ll hopefully land on some good wisdom to guide us as we seek the Lord’s will for Potomac Hills.  If you’d like to meditate on some Scripture in the lead up to Sunday, I’d encourage you to read through Matthew 28:16-20, Luke 24:44-49, Acts 1:8, Ephesians 4:11-16, and 1 Peter 2:9. I look forward to looking at what the Bible has to say about the mission of the church with all of you this Sunday!
