Heart Prep for Sunday, September 8th

Well, we’ve started in on the Gospel of Mark and I hope you’re excited to be back in the gospels.  Mark is the only one of the four gospel writers to call his book a gospel (which means ‘Good News’), but he didn’t invent the word.  It was used in the common language of the time, and it meant that some history-making, life-shaping event had happened, and a messenger has come to tell you the good news.  When the gospel comes, it means that some joyful event has happened.  It could be the birth of a king or maybe the coronation of that king.  It could also be a great victory.  It could be news of freedom.  A gospel is something that has happened in history and has been done for you that changes your status forever.

That’s why it’s so striking that Mark announces his book as gospel.  He’s the messenger bringing us good news.  And this week, we’ll be in two sections of Mark, chapter 1 – verses 14-20 and verses 35-39.  I’ve called this sermon, “Seek and Find” because both sections have both elements – seeking and finding.  And that raises some questions, “Who are you seeking?  And who is seeking you?  And what happens when the one who is sought … is found?  Does it change things?  Does finding who you’re seeking really matter?”  And when you find that someone, or when they find you … does it qualify as good news, as gospel?

We’ll be trying to answer those questions this Sunday.  See you then, Dr. Dave
