The Prophet's Book Burning (Jeremiah 36:1-32)

June 9, 2019 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Jeremiah - Faithful Living in a Fallen World

Topic: Sermons Passage: Jeremiah 36:1–32

Have you ever been accused of burning a Bible?  Probably not (at least, I hope not).  And yet, it’s happening today in many parts of the world.  I know that seems hard to believe in this day and age, but sadly, it’s getting worse, not better.  In reality, it’s not a new thing at all, the history of the Bible is filled with accounts of them getting burned.  I don’t know when opponents of God’s Word (and thus opponents of God Himself) first started burning Bibles, but one of the earliest recorded episodes of Scripture being burned is in our text for this week.  On Sunday, we'll be looking at “The Prophet’s Book Burning” from Jeremiah 36.

For centuries, even millennia, foolish people have thought they could get rid of words they didn’t like by burning them.  Somehow, they thought they could rid the world of “troublesome ideas” by burning the books containing those ideas.  However, it rarely, if ever, works … because burning books can never get at the source of those words or ideas.  Of course, when it comes to the Bible, the source of those words or “troublesome ideas” is God Himself, working through the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).

Jeremiah is going to show us what happens when someone thinks they can disregard God by destroying His Words.  There are powerful consequences for these kinds of actions, which we’ll see on Sunday.  However, since none of us are burning Bibles (you did say you weren’t doing that, right?), what difference does this make to us today?  Actually, quite a bit, but you’ll have to come on Sunday to learn how.  Should be interesting.  See you then, Dr. Dave

P.S.  We have a baptism this Sunday and we’ll be recognizing our graduates too!  You won’t want to miss it!
