Many of us had to read Homer's The Odyssey when we were in school; I even had to teach it when I was an 9th grade English teacher.  I will never forget the part of the book where Odysseus' ship is heading towards home but passing through an area where the sirens lived.  The sirens were creatures that took the form of beautiful women who lured sailors to destruction by the sweetness of their songs.  Odysseus orders his men to plug their ears with wax so they cannot hear the songs, but wanting to hear the music himself, he had himself tied to the mast so that he would not jump overboard when he heard it.  He gave in to temptation without actually abandoning himself to it.

Every Christian is tempted, from the small areas of compromise to the big areas of infidelity and greed.  1 Corinthians 10:13 says that "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man."  Do you believe that?  Sometimes we think that we're the only ones with these crazy temptations, but even Mother Theresa and your saintly grandmother struggled with giving in to temptations.  Jesus was tempted in every way.  This Sunday we'll look at King David's biggest temptation and the resulting fall to help remind ourselves how to deal with temptation (aside from tying ourselves to a mast for long periods of time).  Lots going on this weekend, I hope that you're looking forward to the Fellowship Lunch and gathering with the people of God on the Lord's Day.  See you then!  -Dave
