Cross Word: Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:1-11:1)

January 21, 2018 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Cross Words - A Series on 1 Corinthians

Topic: Sermons Passage: 1 Corinthians 10:1– 11:1

Well, we’re back into the easy-to-understand, non-controversial book of 1st Corinthians.  And this week will be interesting because we’ll be going through 1 Corinthians 10, the first half of which I preached on last April when we were going through our series on Misunderstood Verses.  So now you know that there’s a commonly misunderstood verse in this passage.  But there’s also a passage that seems to be about the Lord’s Supper, followed by the whole “should I eat food offered to idols” discussion, which you thought we cleared up back in chapter 8.  So what’s going on?  The general subject of this chapter is Idolatry, but specifically, Paul is teaching the Corinthians (and us) about the effects of idolatry and how it can bring us great harm, lead us into compromising the faith, and damaging our relationships with others.

I’m pretty sure the Corinthians would reply, “Well, we don’t want all that stuff.”  However, they had a huge problem, in that they still wanted their idolatry.  And they didn’t just dabble in idolatry, they  dove in enthusiastically.  They  endulged in idolatry.  They loved it and couldn’t wait for more.  Then they would come to church on Sunday and say something to the effect of “But we really like Jesus too!  Why can’t we have both?”  And Paul’s letting them know that it’s not only wrong, but it will hurt.  It will hurt them, it will hurt their friends, it will hurt their families, and it will hurt the church.  So what’s the antidote to idolatry?  That’s the question we’re dealing with this Sunday.  I hope to see you there!  Dr. Dave

This Sunday we’ll also be recognizing Sanctity of Life Sunday and taking our annual offering for the PCA Ministerial Relief Fund (postponed from Christmas Eve).  Taking care of our retired pastors and missionaries and their widows is a Sanctity of LIfe issue.  I hope you’ll bring an extra check to support this critical need, thanks.
