Moving from Shadows to Substance (Exodus 20:4-6)

July 2, 2017 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Movements of Grace - A series on the Ten Commandments

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 20:4–6

Hey, have you ever had one of "those" Sunday mornings?  You know, the one where everything goes wrong, you forgot to put the coffee in the coffee maker the night before, the kids are already taking off the nice clothes you just put on them, the dog gets sick on the rug, and your spouse comes downstairs with mismatched socks.  And you just stop and wonder, "What's the point?  If we can't make this work, maybe we shouldn't go at all?"  Well, Good News!  God has given us the Second Commandment just for days like that!

We're five sermons in with our summer series on The Ten Commandments, but we've only gotten to the Second Commandment (apparently we've had some of "those" mornings too)!  I've entitled this series, "The Movement of Grace," because each commandment moves us away from being self-centered to being more God-centered.  And that helps us to answer the question, "What's the point?"  Because there is a point to worship.  This Sunday we're not going to look at who to worship (that was the First Commandment), but we're going to talk about how to worship.  However we're not going to talk so much about the specifics of hymns vs songs, or whatever you do or don't like about our worship service, but rather why you come to worship at all (do you have a good reason?), what attitude you have when you do come to worship, and how well you actually worship when you finally get there.  It should be interesting.  And I'll be praying that you don't have one of "those" mornings on Sunday.  See you then, Dr. Dave
