Moving from Bondage to Redemption (Exodus 20:1-2)

May 28, 2017 Speaker: Rev. Jonathan Dorst Series: Movements of Grace - A series on the Ten Commandments

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 20:1–2

Well, this week we’re starting a new series on The Ten Commandments.  If you remember, when we went through The Book of Exodus (Sept. 2015 – August 2016), I preached one sermon in April 2016 on the commandments titled, “The Law of the Lord.”  But now, as promised, we’re going to go back through the commandments one-by-one and this week’s text, Exodus 20:1, gives us the theme for the series, “The Movement of Grace.”

The first sermon in the series focuses on re-orienting our lives from one of speaking to one of listening (so says the speaker).  Each of the sermons in this series will focus on re-orienting some aspect of our lives from the way of the world, which generally displeases God, to the way of the Lord, which generally pleases God.  Hence, the emphasis on “Movement.”

Additionally, there’s both a positive (do this) and a negative (don’t do that) aspect to each of the commandments.  Some old theologians refer to them as the “offensive” and “defensive” actions associated with the commandments.  We’ll be using two images for this series.  You’ve seen the one with the fencers, reminding us (hopefully) of the “offensive” and “defensive” actions we’ll be talking about.  There’s another beautiful piece of art commissioned for this series that I’ll post next week when I finish getting my new computer all set up (which is driving me crazy!).  It will remind us of the awesomeness of the God who gives us the commandments.

I think this series will be very worthwhile.
So, let’s get started!  See you Sunday, Dr. Dave
