The Promise of His Reign (Isaiah 40:1-11; 9:7)

January 1, 2017 Speaker: Rev. Dave Dorst Series: Christmas in Isaiah - Advent 2016

Topic: Sermons Passage: Jeremiah 40:1–11, Isaiah 9:7

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying this week off from school and (for some of you) off of work. 2016 is coming to a close and I hope you’ve had some time to reflect on what God has done in your life in addition to thinking about how He might work in the coming year (now is a great time to think about a good Bible reading plan for the coming year). The last few years I’ve put together a slide show for the whole year that our family enjoys watching together, remembering all the great events and activities that we were involved in.

This simultaneous looking backwards and looking forwards is a constant tension in our lives. Sometimes we are rebuked for not living “in the moment,” and there’s a lot to say for being present where you are, so that you’re not reliving the past or worrying excessively about the future. But the Bible calls us to constantly “remember” how the Lord has worked in the past, as well as giving us a picture of where we’re headed so that we know that we are safe in the hands of the One who holds the future. Our recent sermons have looked back at Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection (as prophesied by Isaiah). This Sunday we’ll be looking at the promises of His present and future reign. I’ll see you Sunday with lots of coffee ready to kick off the New Year focusing on the Lord and His love and care for us! -Rev. Dorst
