This week we’ve come to Ephesians 5:18-6:4, the Apostle Paul’s famous passage on marriage and family. This passage includes such non-controversial topics as submission and sacrifice. But since it’s obvious that all the marriages represented at Potomac Hills are perfect, perhaps we can just skip over it and go on to the next chapter.
What? “Not Perfect,” you say? How can that be? Don’t you love each other? Well, as everyone in today’s enlightened society knows, love is all you need! Commitment, after all, is so old-fashioned! Unfortunately for our enlightened society, that is not at all what the Scriptures teach. As for the “Perfect Marriage” – well, there’s no such thing this side of Heaven. Every marriage has flaws – yours, mine, and all the rest! So what does it take to demonstrate love and commitment in the midst of flawed marriages? And if marriage is hard work, parenting ups the ante! And our track record with our children is often just as flawed as our marriage.
But what if Gary Thomas, the author of “Sacred Marriage,” is right? What if the purpose of marriage is not to make you happy, but to make you holy? How would that change things? This week we’re looking at The Gospel Home and what that looks like in our everyday, ordinary lives. As it has been throughout Ephesians, it’s far more easier said than done. So, how does the Gospel impact our marriages and our families? That’s what we’ll wrestle with this Sunday. And the answers may surprise you. So come Sunday to learn more! See you then, Dr. Dave
