The Covenant of the Lord (Exodus 24:1-18)

June 12, 2016 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Exodus - The Glory of the Lord

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 24:1–18

Well, this week we’re back to the Book of Exodus. And specifically, we’re back to Exodus 24:1-18, where the Covenant with the Lord is confirmed. Now I’m using the word “confirmed” lightly, mostly because this is the third time the Israelites have promised, verse 7, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” We make promises like that too, don’t we? We fall into some besetting sin (meaning repeated sin) and we repent (again), and we swear we’re never going to do that again. We promise. We really mean it this time. We’ll obey. And how does that go?

Well (apparently I like starting paragraphs with “well”), in less than 40 days after promising to be obedient, the Israelites will be pitching their gold jewelry into the smelting pot to become part of the golden calf. They were, once again, law-breakers. They broke their promise. They did it again. They failed to obey. Sadly, they’re just like us, or more correctly, we’re just like them. We promised. We meant it. We’ll obey. Really. Trust me. And then, “Oh look, sin, let’s do that!”

So what do we do about that? How do we overcome that? And what difference does Jesus make in our ability to obey the law? Those are the kind of questions we’ll be working through together this Sunday. I hope you’ll be there! Dr. Dave
