The Judgment of the Lord (Exodus 7:14-24)

November 22, 2015 Speaker: Rev. Dave Dorst Series: Exodus - The Glory of the Lord

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 7:14–24

As many of you know, I was a “head banger” in high school. I had a ridiculous mullet and would listen to hard rock/heavy metal records every night. Most of it was pretty dark, but I used to use selective songs to try to convince my parents that it wasn’t that bad. Like the song “Creeping Death” by Metallica – “Dad, it’s about Moses and the Exodus, it’s practically a Christian song. We could sing it at church!” Here were some of the words (cue the chugging, distorted guitar and singing/yelling growl): “Slaves, Hebrews born to serve to the Pharaoh / Heed to his every word, live in fear / Faith of the unknown one, the deliverer / Wait, something must be done, 400 years / Now let my people go, land of Goshen / Go, I will be with Thee, bush of fire / Blood running red and strong down the Nile / Plague, darkness three days long, hail to fire / So let it be written, so let it be done, to kill the firstborn Pharaoh’s son, I’m creeping death!”

So this Sunday we’ll be looking at the original Biblical account of Nile water being turned to blood. One commentary that I “accidentally” threw in my trash can said: “Obviously the Nile water was not turned into literal blood.” I agree with Metallica over this scholar who rejects the supernatural outright – we actually believe that God turned the Nile water into blood. Why and when He did it are a little more complicated. Let’s delve into the passage together Sunday morning. And don’t forget that this will be our last Exodus sermon before January because we are doing an Advent series on the book of Ruth that will take us through Dec. 27th. -Dave Dorst
