A Better Conscience (Hebrews 13:1-19)

June 21, 2015 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 13:1–13:19

Well, it's good to be back. After driving to Charleston, SC (9 hours) for a wedding; Chattanooga, TN for General Assembly (7 hours); Jacksonville, FL to visit my parents (9 hours); and then back home (12 hours), I'm pretty tired of driving and very glad to be home. I had a great time at General Assembly, and while there was lots of drama (1000 preachers and 10 microphones -- not a pretty sight), there was very little in the way of dramatic decisions. Which means that, in general, most folks thought things in the PCA are going pretty well. We did elect Dr. Lloyd Kim (a missionary physician) as the new Coordinator of Mission to the World (MTW); he's our first Korean-American Coordinator and that was enormously encouraging to all our Korean-American brothers. Our last evening (Thursday), we had a long discussion / debate on the topic of racial reconciliation and ended with a season of prayer that lasted until midnight and was very powerful. Since we're usually racing the clock to finish all our business, this was encouraging that people were willing to stay late to pray and repent regarding this crucial topic.

There was a great emphasis on brotherly love, hospitality, upholding Biblical standards of morality and sound doctrine, and maintaining a clear conscience through regular repentance and prayer. Providentially, these are all topics covered in this week's passage, Hebrews 13:1-19. This is the final wrap of the Book of Hebrews and serves as the summary of everything that's gone before.

Hopefully, by now you know that the Adult Bible Class has begun a summer long journey through 1 & 2 Peter during Sunday School. I hope you can make it. Additionally, starting in July we'll begin a summer preaching series through Proverbs called "Wisdom for Life," which is something we all need a little more of. Thanks for being a great church. It's good to be home. And it's good to be back with you. See you Sunday, Dr. Dave
