There are a few types of people I'm uncomfortable around -- one is the skeptic, that guy who's always giving you a reason, a rationale, or a hypothetical situation showing why what you said / think / believe is obviously wrong (and subtly calling you an idiot in the process). The other person who makes me uncomfortable is the know-it-all, the legalist, that guy who asks a question, not to find out the answer, but to demonstrate how much he knows (certainly more than you). I often fail to think of the right thing to say until well after the encounter is over.
Thankfully, Jesus is far more perceptive and gracious than I am. In our passage this week, Matthew 22:23-40, Jesus encounters both sorts of men (possibly at a church picnic like we're having this Sunday) and Jesus answers them both in such a way that He's authoritative without being mean-spirited. I think we have a lot to learn from these encounters (well, at least I do). I'm looking forward to being together again and learning from Jesus. And I hope you are too.
See you Sunday, Dr. Dave
