Moving from gods to God (Exodus 20:3)

June 25, 2017 Speaker: Frank Pugh, Ruling Elder Series: Movements of Grace - A series on the Ten Commandments

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 20:3

We began our series on the Ten Commandments a few weeks ago by setting the context with the first two verses of Exodus 20.  Last week, for father's day, we jumped ahead to the fifth commandment.  This week, we go back to the first commandment: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."  Pretty straightforward, right? Yes, but that doesn't mean it's easy to follow, especially when surrounded by a culture of other gods who call for us to"co-exist."  For that matter, wouldn't it be helpful to modify some of God's commands or his characteristic that we find difficult?  That way, we would not have the inconvenience of having to admit we were wrong or to repent.
Alas, we so easily to fall into the trap of creating our own gods, even putting God's name on them (like a golden calf). Or, worse, we fall into that original temptation to be god ourselves.  Thankfully, there is a Savior to pull us out of this self-made mess.  I look forward to preaching about all this on Sunday.
