Moving from Speaking to Listening (Exodus 20:1-2)

June 4, 2017 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Movements of Grace - A series on the Ten Commandments

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 20:1–2

Well, this week we’re in a new series on The Ten Commandments and this week’s text, Exodus 20:1-2, gives us the theme for the series, “The Movement of Grace.”  Last week, Rev. Jonathan Dorst did a great job introducing the series and he focused on Exodus 20:2, which was reminding us of the greatness of our God.  This week I’m going to back up a verse and look closer at verse 1, which will show us how it’s a movement of grace to go from speaking to listening.  Each sermon in this series will focus on re-orienting some aspect of our lives from the way of the world, which generally displeases God, to the way of the Lord, which generally pleases God.  Hence, the emphasis on “Movement.”  And while every leadership book I own (and I own a few) emphasizes the importance of listening, truth be told, most of us are not very good at it.  And we’re even worse when it comes to listening to God, so that’s what we’re going to talk about this Sunday.  See you then, Dr. Dave

By the way, I was so pleased that we were able to surprise Dave & Kathy Dorst and honor them for 15 years of faithful service to Potomac Hills.  Hebrews 13:7, 17 teaches us to “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God.  Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. … Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.  Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”  It’s a joy to be able to do ministry side-by-side with Dave.  Please find time to personally thank he & Kath for their love and service to our church.
