Those Gospel Roles (Ephesians 6:1-9)

November 13, 2016 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Ephesians - The Gospel Life

Topic: Sermons Passage: Ephesians 6:1–9

Wow, what a week! Joanne and I got a good dose of toddler reality over the last week. I’ve said for years that the most tired people in the church are moms of toddlers. And now I remember why I’ve said that!. However, all the fun and games had to come to end sometime and our precocious grandchildren have gone home with their parental overlords (need to pray for them more!). The fact that this week I’m preaching on a passage that teaches us about the relationships of Parents and Children is entirely coincidental (No, Dave, the word you’re looking for is “providential,” uh, okay, thanks.). And this passage (Ephesians 6:1-4) makes one wish that there was a magic “obedience” pill we could hand out and our children would become remarkably well-behaved overnight (Don’t get your hopes up). And yet, since all of us are currently children, but only some of us are currently parents, this is an important issue for us all. That’s the first role we’re going to talk about Sunday.

Of course, it’s been quite a week in other ways too. We’ve just come through another contentious election where disagreements have gotten pronounced and relationships have gotten strained. And now everyone just wants to take a deep breath and exhale slowly. And that brings us to the second role we’ll address this Sunday, which is one of slaves and masters (Ephesians 6:5-9). You think they had strained relationships and bitter disagreements? They sure did! And so, like the other relationships Paul has mentioned, this is also an important issue for us. You see, we’re all currently slaves, but only some of us are currently masters. Now you may not feel like either a slave or a master at the present time, but you are, so this is probably something we should talk about. And we’ll do that this Sunday. And the discussion may surprise you. Come Sunday to learn more! See you then, Dr. Dave
