The Gospel Change (Ephesians 4:17-32)

October 23, 2016 Speaker: Rev. Dave Dorst Series: Ephesians - The Gospel Life

Topic: Sermons Passage: Ephesians 4:17–32

Do you have a FitBit? I’ve started using the “Health” app on my iPhone to track how many steps I take during the day. When we were walking around Europe on vacation we were getting an average of over 15,000 steps a day, which helped keep me from gaining too much weight from the massive soft pretzels I was eating every day. But now that I’m home, my average workday barely gets 3,000 steps if I don’t make myself get some activity. Now I suppose it’s a sad commentary on my age that I used to measure my fitness by how many games of basketball or how many miles I ran and now I’m just counting daily steps. But it reminds me that walking is important. And in this week’s sermon passage (the second half of Ephesians 4), Paul talks about how we should walk (which more fully means how we should live) – not like we used to walk or like the culture around us walks, but as ones who have been renewed and given a new holy self. Sinclair Ferguson reminds us, “Clearly it takes a lifetime to work out into our thinking and living all the implications of this truth. But Paul has given notice that the gospel is a message of cosmic proportions. It is no small thing to become a Christian… We need to learn Christ.”

I hope you’re digging into the book of Ephesians as we work through it, it’s an amazing book. It’s never too late to join a Community Group where we go deeper in discussing and applying the sermon Scriptures. And as we look at the upcoming schedule, I’m excited about both our New Members Class this coming Saturday and the Fall Festival on the 30th. Those are events for growing our church body in all different ways: in spiritual depth, in size, and in fellowship with one another. See you Sunday! -Dave Dorst
