Filled With Good Things (Ruth 1:19-2:23)

December 6, 2015 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Christmas in Ruth! - Advent 2015

Topic: Sermons Passage: Ruth 1:19– 2:23

Well, apparently we’ve started this hectic race to Christmas. All I predict that all the shopping, busyness, and preparation just may wear us out. The commencement of the Christmas shopping season overshadows the commencement of a far quieter season. The season of Advent signals the coming of Christmas. When everyone around you is running, standing still is easier said than done. But the call of Advent is simply to stop.

Advent is a season meant to slow us down. It’s about finding the kind of quiet and emptiness that can hold the fullness of God as an infant among us. Of course, for even the quietest of hearts, this God who becomes human, the incarnate Christ, is still a mystery. But mystery, like beauty and truth, is well worth stillness, wonder, and contemplation. Christ will come regardless. The hope of Advent is that it is always possible to make room for Him.

This week we’ll be looking at Ruth, chapter two in our Advent series on “Christmas in Ruth.” The Old Testament Book of Ruth has a lot to teach us about love in hard times. And this week we’re introduced to another main character in the person of Boaz. And Boaz does for Ruth what Ruth could not do for herself. Wait, doesn’t that sound like the Gospel? Why yes, yes it does. So come this Sunday and hear for yourself. See you there! Dr. Dave
