A Better Assurance (Hebrews 10:19-39)

May 3, 2015 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 10:19–10:39

It’s a great day this coming Sunday as we get to celebrate both of the Sacraments: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. And in addition we’ll be obedient to the 11th Commandment (“Thou Shalt Have Food”) as we have a Fellowship Lunch after the service. So it’s going to be a great day. Let me focus on one of those events for a moment, and that’s the Lord’s Supper. I want to implore you to “run to the table!” Not because your souls will be in jeopardy if you don’t take communion. It’s because the Lord’s Table is our Ebenezer Stone — our reminder that according to 1 Samuel 7:12, “Till now the Lord has helped us.” It is our reminder that, according to Luke 7:47, “he who is forgiven little, loves little.” The Lord’s Table is our reminder that we have been forgiven “much” and that grace and truth compels us to love “much.”

And it just so happens (who knew?) that the grace and truth of the Lord’s Supper fits very well with our text for this week, Hebrews 10:19-39. This passage contains the well-known (but often ignored) command, "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. “ Why is this important? Why does Jesus want us to do these things? Why should we ”uc">“stir up one another to love and good works”? Why should we meet weekly in order to “encourage one another”? We’ll be looking at those questions as we prepare our hearts to “run to the table, to run to the church, and to run to Jesus!” Come this Sunday to learn more about why Jesus is Better! See you then!
