A Better Hope (Hebrews 7:1-28)

March 29, 2015 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 7:1–7:28

I love a good adventure story. Most of my “fun” reading consists of mysteries, action-adventures, military and techno-thrillers, spy stories, and so on. In most of these stories, the “hero” is thrust into an impossible situation where there is no hope of escape and he or she will surely die (along with the obligatory love interest whom they’re trying to save in the first place). But, somehow, at the last second and against all odds, our “hero” pulls it out, the bad guy goes down, he gets the girl (or vice-versa), and they walk off into the sunset. Only to meet a mysterious figure who is there to set up the sequel!

Our passage for this week, Hebrews 7, is the long-awaited sequel to the military adventure story of Genesis 14. There’s a “hero,” a daring rescue, a dramatic escape, and an unexplained mysterious figure. And I guess Hebrews 7 is part of God’s way of making us read the whole book, because it is here that the mysterious figure is finally explained. His name is Melchizedek and he’s the Priest-King of Salem, and the forerunner of the Messiah. So where does he come from? What does he do? Why is he important? And what difference does it make to us anyway? Well, those are the questions we’ll be wrestling with this Sunday. I hope to see you there! Dr. Dave
