A Better Sabbath (Hebrews 4:1-13)

March 1, 2015 Speaker: Rev. Tom Rubino Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 4:1–4:13

As I type this, I’m looking at the window and watching snow fall… AGAIN!

I love snow (and watching my girls play in it), but after all these weeks of feeling like I’m living in Antarctica, I’m growing a little weary. I’m weary of my hands stinging from the cold when I walk to my car. I’m weary of wondering if my cracked, frayed snow shovel will hang on for one more round before giving up the ghost. This kind of weather just makes you want to move to Florida or something, doesn’t it??

Well I don’t know if they ever experienced snow, but I know that the Hebrews were weary too. I know this because they lived in a fallen, broken, corrupted world, just like us. On top of that, they were facing another round of persecution. They may not have seen snow and we may not have experienced the same kind of persecution they endured, but it’s a sure bet that we all share(d) the same weariness. And I’m not just talking about being physically tired. I’m talking about a real weariness of the soul.

This is why the fourth chapter of Hebrews was so relevant to them and also to us. In verses 1-13, the author will continue his application (from the last chapter) of Psalm 95 and his urging of us to make sure that we’ve entered God’s promised rest. He’ll also teach us more about what this rest is and finish by reminding us that God won’t let us rest until we’ve entered His rest.

So be sure to get your weary selves out of bed and join me as we all get terribly convicted, yet wonderfully encouraged by God’s Word this Sunday morning.

And if that invitation wasn’t motivating enough… I’ve also heard rumors that this is the last Sunday for one of our church families… and that there’s going to be a big party after the service. Now I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to miss that!

See you Sunday!

Pastor Tom
