A Better Rest (Hebrews 3:7-19)

February 22, 2015 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 3:7–3:19

So, how’s your winter going? Loving the snow and cold? Enjoying the shoveling and scraping? I’m sure for some of you that’s all true … but not for most of you. Most of you, like me, are finding that winter is starting to get old (pretty much like it does every February). I’m finding it’s hard to find rest … especially when I want to rest so badly. However, in the Bible, “rest” isn’t always referring to a comfortable mattress (Man, I hate that! Love comfortable mattresses!) Our passage this week is Hebrews 3:7-19 and it’s all about rest. But interestingly it ties our ability to rest with our ability to believe. Wow, what’s that all about? Well, that’s what we’ll be wrestling with this Sunday. I hope you can be there.

If you’ve been following the news, then by now you’ve probably heard or read something about ISIS, the emerging Islamic State in the Middle East. Just this past weekend, ISIS summarily executed 21 Egyptian men for the sole crime of being Christians (they were members of the Coptic Christian Church, working in Libya). It’s a bold reminder to all of us that the persecution of Christians is ongoing in our world and Christ has warned us that there can be serious costs to following Him. Please take time this week to pray for the persecuted church throughout the world.

Revelation 20:4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

It is a privilege to know Christ, have His Word, and come to Him in prayer — without fear. Let’s not waste that privilege. See you Sunday, Dr. Dave
