A Better Word (Hebrews 1:1-4)

January 4, 2015 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 1:1–1:4

Well, the rumors are true! I’m returning from sabbatical this Sunday and will be starting a new sermon series on the Book of Hebrews. Hebrews is a great book – I believe it’s actually a sermon – meant to be read or heard in one sitting. That would be a great goal for us at the beginning of 2015, to read (or listen) to the Book of Hebrews once a week. You can easily do it in one or two sittings, it’s no longer than a feature article in a magazine. For those of you who spend a lot of time in the car, most of the online Bibles now have a audio feature so you can listen to it while you commute. The theme of our time in Hebrews will be “Jesus is Better – Make My Heart Believe!” And that would be a great prayer to start 2015 off with.

Six months ago, the Session wisely appointed Rev. Dave Dorst as the Interim Pastor in my absence. At that time I asked you to give him your full support and confidence, as well as to pray for him regularly! I hope you did that because I think he did a great job – if you think so too, then please let him know! Encouraging words are powerful! The church was also well-served by Rev. Tom Rubino, who got our new Community Groups organized (Are you in a group? It’s not too late to sign up and you really need this! I do too!) and by Rev. Jeff Lee who got the City up and running (you should have joined that by now too!) so we can keep up with everything going on at Potomac Hills.

As I’ve been away, Joanne and I visited lots of other churches, and I’ve become even more convinced that being an active part of a local church, and for you and me in particular that means being an active member of Potomac Hills, is vital to the spiritual health of each and every one of us. I heard some great (and not-so-great) sermons at other churches, but I found what I missed most of all was you. The Fellowship of the Saints, and not just any saints, but the saints at my church, the saints that I pray for, the saints that I want to talk to and spend time with, the saints that I minister the Word of God to week after week. All of you.

So Welcome Back! Where Have You Been? See You Sunday! Dr. Dave

Think about this as you get ready for the start of a New Year – if you had to describe your life in just six words, what would they be?
