Genesis 2:1-3 tells us that on the seventh day God rested from His creative work. It was not because He was exhausted and needed it, but a choice to cease His activity and feel deep satisfaction in His work. We are called to rest on the Sabbath as well to celebrate creation and redemption, and as a sign of the covenant. Furthermore, we must never lose sight of the fact that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath, and that we also need to rest in the gospel of grace from our own works of self-righteousness.
