The Last Battle, Revelation 20:7-15

July 11, 2010 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: The King’s Triumphant Return - A Series in Revelation

Topic: Sermons Passage: Revelation 20:7–20:15

This week, we're back in Revelation as Pastor Dave preaches from Revelation 20, which includes the famous passage about "The Last Battle" and "The Last Judgment."  Dr. John Piper writes about these verses, "So we come back to the judgment in Revelation 20. In verse 15, it says, "If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." This implies that being in the book of life insures that one will not perish. Salvation is secured for all who are written in the book of life.  The reason that being written in the book of life secures our salvation is that the book is called "the book of life of the Lamb who was slain" (Revelation 13:8). The names in this book are not saved on the basis of their deeds. They are saved on the basis of Christ's being slain. He "loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood" (Revelation 1:5). We have been ransomed by his blood (Revelation 5:9).  This is another text where we need to focus on the big picture and not get lost in the details.  When we can do that, we'll see that it's a wonderful picture, because it's a picture of Christ.
